LCPD vows truth to its motto “Palominos First” and strengthens safety throughout the community

Long before most students arrive for class and long after the last lights go out, the Laredo College Police Department (LCPD) is hard at work. From everyday assistance to emergency response, LCPD plays a steady and often unseen role in campus life, enforcing state laws while maintaining a safe and secure environment across all Laredo College campuses, events and facilities.

The department is led by Laredo College Police Chief Jose Hernandez, whose experience and leadership guide a dedicated team of highly trained officers committed to campus safety and community engagement. Together, they work daily to ensure that students, faculty, staff and visitors can learn, work and gather in a secure setting.

Guided by the departmental motto, “Palominos First,” LCPD officers are known not only for their professionalism but also for their approachable nature and strong relationships with the campus community. Officers prioritize visibility and open communication, fostering trust through regular interaction with students and staff while remaining ready to respond when needed.

LCPD maintains a strong police presence on both the Ft. McIntosh Campus and the South Campus, thoroughly investigating any crimes committed on college property. The department also works closely with local and regional law enforcement agencies to help ensure the safety of the broader community and strengthen coordinated response efforts.

In addition to traditional law enforcement duties, LCPD provides a range of services designed to support students and staff. These include motorist assistance such as battery recharges, tire inflation and vehicle lock-out assistance. Officers are also available to provide security escorts to vehicles or classrooms upon request, adding an extra layer of safety, particularly during evening hours.

The department’s capabilities extend well beyond patrol services. Multiple LCPD officers are state-certified hostage negotiators and certified Emergency Medical Responders, allowing them to respond effectively during critical incidents. LCPD has also developed a strong working relationship with Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN), partnering with the organization on multiple occasions to educate students and the community on mental health awareness, personal safety and early intervention resources.

LCPD continues to strengthen community partnerships through specialized training and collaboration. One notable initiative includes joining forces with the United Independent School District Police Department, Laredo Independent School District Police Department and instructors from the Laredo College Regional Law Enforcement Academy to conduct active shooter training for all LCPD officers at the Ft. McIntosh Campus. These joint efforts reinforce preparedness and interoperability across agencies.

The department also actively monitors the Campus Shield Safety app, a resource available to LC students, faculty, staff and the community. This initiative is coordinated with the Student Success and Compliance Division under the leadership of Dr. David Arreazola and enhances real-time communication and safety awareness on campus.

Beyond enforcement and response, LCPD officers regularly provide educational presentations addressing topics such as active shooter preparedness, drunk driving, alcohol abuse prevention and personal safety awareness. These efforts highlight the department’s commitment to prevention, education and community well-being.

Looking ahead, the Laredo College Police Department remains dedicated to expanding outreach, raising awareness and continuing to educate students and community members on safety-related issues. The department is available for in-class presentations at Laredo College and throughout the community.
